This recipe right here is straightforward and easy to follow. Grab your vanilla wafer and supplies and work through the steps and assemble a creamy and silky smooth pudding.

Eggs, sweetened condensed milk, vanilla, bananas, Nilla wafers are all you need to create the creamiest and most flavorful banana pudding recipe.

Young and old will be running with their plates to serve up another serving. Add a dollop of whipped cream on top, or top with meringue. Our choice is some more Nilla wafers to add that nice crunchy vanilla cookie texture to the silky smooth pudding.

Don’t burn your pudding mixture | Make sure to watch your pudding, because if you are not careful you can and will burn, and then you will have to start over. This isn’t a recipe you can set and forget.

Opt for Nilla Wafers | I have seen other recipes and tried it myself where you use shortbread or other types of vanilla cookies. It is just not the same and no other cookie will compare to the effect of a wafer paired to the pudding!

Ripe Bananas | Don’t go for under-ripe or over-ripe bananas. If they are over-ripe they will have so much flavor it could be overpowering. I aim for nice yellow colored bananas that have just a few tiny brown specks on it.

So there you have it! Making your own homemade banana pudding is rather easy, and once you try it, no more boxed mixes for you! Let me know what you think, and enjoy.

Ingredients

  • 9 Eggs, separated into 2 separate bowls
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can water, use your empty milk can
  • 6 to 7 bananas
  • 1 box Nilla Wafers

Instructions

For the vanilla pudding

  1. Fill a saucepan about 3/4 full with water and bring it to a boil.
  2. In separate bowls separate the eggs
  3. Add sweetened condensed milk, vanilla and 1 can of water to the egg yolks mix well and set aside.
  4. Pour egg mixture in another pan or stainless steel bowl
  5. Carefully sit the egg mixture pan on top of the boiling water pan (double boil) stirring constantly until it starts to thicken, about 7 to 10 minutes it will be the consistency of runny pudding
  6. Once it thickens turn it off and set aside
  7. In a pan or casserole dish layer wafers, bananas over and over till your pan is full
  8. Pour the pudding evenly over your layers of bananas and Nilla wafers.
  9. Now, this is usually where I cover mine and refrigerate, but some people like meringue on there’s so if you like meringue then, use your egg whites to make the meringue
  10. Refrigerate until chilled
